Ah June - such a popular month for weddings! Now that same-sex marriage is (somewhat) legal in California and that those marriages will be recognized in New York like any other, I’m sure this will be quite a bicoastal summer for plenty of folks. Still, you won’t find many politicians who unequivocally lobby for marriage equality. This election year, all the remaining candidates oppose same-sex marriage but also oppose a constitutional amendment banning it.
Madonna, I know a couple of things about you; probably only what you want me to know. As an artist, I thought I could relate to what I thought was your artistic integrity. As a fan, I’ve bought copies of some your music. I bought your last album because I liked it, but I have no intentions of buying your latest one. Nevertheless, I have some questions for you.
Maya Angelou says she still supports Hillary for president. A master of the English language, she chose that word ‘still’ for every bit of its meaning and for a reason. However, there is nothing virtuosic or poetic about her continued support of Mrs. Clinton’s presidential candidacy - especially since Hillary has so far refused to explain her and her husband’s relationship to the United Daughters of the Confederacy. And how does the ex-‘first Black president’ (thank you Toni Morrison) resolve “fighting AIDS in Africa” from his Harlem office to awarding a series of presidential commendations to a group in cahoots with the KKK?
(Note to Bill: the word ‘pharmaceutical’ doesn’t show up even once on your foundation’s website. Kudos to your marketing team.)
